Configuring Kindle Fire with MailVPN settings
Configure Kindle Fire so you can check and send email with your university email account.
To configure Kindle Fire with MailVPN settings, do the following:
- Make sure you are connected to wi-fi.
- On the home screen, press Apps from the menu at the top of the screen.
- Press Email.
- Press Start.
- Press Other.
- Enter your email address in the Username field.
- Your email address is
yourULID@ilstu.edu.
- Your email address is
- Enter your password in the Password field.
- Press Next.
- If the Next button is grayed out (unclickable), check to make sure you have entered your entire email address in the box above.
- Press IMAP.
- You are presented with several options for incoming mail settings. Do the following:
- Make sure your ULID appears in the Username field.
- Change the IMAP server field so it reads
mailvpn.ilstu.edu. (The default server of mail.ilstu.edu is insufficient for Kindle Fire because it cannot be used to check email from off campus.) - For Security type, select SSL (always).
- For Authentication type, select PLAIN.
- Make sure Port is 993.
- Make sure IMAP path prefix is (Automatic using NAMESPACE if available). This is what is displayed in this field when the box is empty.
- Press Next.
- Kindle Fire will test your incoming mail settings. If it is successful, it will immediately begin downloading new mail.
- You are presented with several options for outgoing mail settings. Do the following:
- Change the SMTP server field so it reads mailvpn.ilstu.edu. (The default server of smtp.ilstu.edu is insufficient for Kindle Fire because it cannot be used to send email from off campus.)
- For Security type, select SSL (always).
- Make sure Port is 465.
- Make sure there is a check mark next to Require sign-in.
- Make sure Authentication type is AUTOMATIC.
- Make sure your ULID appears in the Username field.
- Press Next.
- Select the desired option for Folder poll frequency. This option determines how often Kindle Fire automatically checks for new email. By default, this option is set to Manually, which means it will not check for new mail unless you open the email app and check manually. This is the recommended option.
- Press Next.
- In the box labeled Type your name, enter your name as you want it to appear on email messages you send.
- In the box labeled Account name, enter a description of this email account. For example, enter
ISU Email. - Decide if you want Kindle Fire to use this account to send mail by default. This option is only relevant if you have more than one mail account configured in the Email app.
- Press View your Inbox.
Kindle Fire is now configured to check and send email from both on and off campus. Kindle Fire requires a wi-fi connection to check and send email.
