Installing Java on Mac OS X 10.7

This article explains how to install Java on Mac OS X 10.7.

Before You Begin

Java is not included in Mac OS X 10.7 by default. Java is required for certain websites and applications.

There are two ways to install Java on Mac OS X 10.7:

  • Install on first use. The first time you visit a website or launch an application that requires Java, you may be prompted to install the missing plugin.
     
  • Install on demand. You can install Java through Java Preferences in Mac OS X 10.7 This method is described below.

Install Java on Mac OS X 10.7

To install Java using Java Preferences on Mac OS X 10.7, do the following:

  1. Open the Finder.
  2. Go to Applications > Utilities.
  3. Double-click Java Preferences.
  4. If Java is not installed, you receive the message, “To open “Java Preferences," you need a Java runtime. Would you like to install one now?” 
  5. Click Install.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Java.
