Problems with Blackboard and Internet Explorer 9

When attempting to access Blackboard using Internet Explorer 9, you encounter an error which prevents you from using Blackboard.

Problem

You cannot access Blackboard using Internet Explorer 9. When you try to log in to Blackboard using Internet Explorer 9, you get the following error:

We were unable to return you to ilstu.edu

Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the website continues to have a problem.

What you can do:

* Go to your home page

* Try to return to ilstu.edu

Additional Information

This problem occurs regardless of whether you are accessing Blackboard through iCampus at http://iCampus.IllinoisState.edu or by going to the Blackboard site at http://blackboard.ilstu.edu.

If you try logging in to Blackboard using another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome, you are able to log in without problems. This problem appears to only affect Internet Explorer 9.

Solution

This problem is caused by an out-of-date version of Java on your computer. You need to uninstall Java from your computer and install the latest version.

To resolve this problem, do the following:

  1. Close all browsers (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc.).
  2. Click Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a program.
  3. Locate each item named Java in the list.
    • For example, you could have an item named Java(TM) 6 Update 24.
    • You could have multiple items named Java.
    • You might need to click the Name column to sort the list alphabetically.
  4. Right-click on each Java item and click Uninstall.
    • Repeat this step to remove all Java items from the list.
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. After your computer restarts, download and install the latest version of Java.
    • Go to www.java.com to download the latest version of Java.
  7. After installing Java, use Internet Explorer 9 to go back to Blackboard and log in.
