Configuring Outlook 2010 with MailVPN settings
Configure Outlook 2010 so you can check email without needing an independent VPN connection. These instructions apply to your email account on the IMAP mail server.
Before You Begin
These instructions explain how to configure Outlook 2010 with your ULID email account. Follow these instructions if you plan to use Outlook primarily from off campus (with the option of using it from on campus). These instructions use IMAP mail settings.
If you plan to use Outlook primarily from on campus, refer to 1677: Configuring Outlook 2010 with campus mail settings.
Faculty/Staff on Exchange: If you are faculty or staff and use Outlook for email, you may be on Exchange. If you use Exchange for email, these instructions do not apply to you. Contact your department's technical support for help. For more information, refer to 1679: Configuring Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2007 for Exchange.
Configure Outlook 2010
To configure Outlook 2010 to use MailVPN settings, do the following:
- Launch Outlook.
- Select the File tab.
- Click Account Settings.
- Select Account Settings....
- Click New....
- Select Email Accounts and click Next.
- In the Your Name: box, enter your name.
- In the E-mail Address: box, enter your university email address.
- Leave the Password: and Retype Password: boxes empty.
- Select Manually Configure server settings or additional server types. Click Next.
- Select Internet E-mail. Click Next.
- In Account Type: drop-down menu, select IMAP.
- In the Incoming mail server: box, type
mailvpn.ilstu.edu. - In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP): box, type
mailvpn.ilstu.edu. - Type your ULID, the first part of your email address, in the User Name: box.
- You may type your password in the Password: box, or you may leave it blank. If you do not want Outlook to save your password, remove the check mark from the box labeled Remember Password.
- Click More Settings....
- Type a name of the account in the Mail Account box.
For example, name the accountMy ISU Email (MailVPN). - Click the Outgoing Server tab.
- Put a check in the box labeled, My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- For Incoming server (IMAP):, do the following:
- Change Use the following type of encrypted connection: to SSL.
- Make sure
993appears next to Incoming server (POP 3).
- For Outgoing server (SMTP):, do the following:
- Change Use the following type of encrypted connection: to SSL.
- Change the port number from 25 to
465next to Outgoing server (SMTP).
- Click OK.
- Click Next.
- Outlook will attempt to check mail. Enter your password if prompted to do so.
- Click Close.
- Click Finish.
You can now use Outlook to check and send mail from off campus without needing an independent VPN connection.
