How to update Windows 7/Vista/XP
Install Windows updates to protect your computer.
Before You Begin
You should install Windows updates to protect your computer from malware and other security risks. Computers on ResNet are evaluated each time they connect to the campus network and are required to install missing Windows updates.
Install Windows Updates
To install Windows updates, refer to the appropriate section below.
Windows 7/Vista
To install Windows updates in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following:
- Click Start > All Programs > Windows Update.
- If updates are ready to be installed, you will see a message that says, Updates are available for your computer.
- We recommend you install all important updates.
- You can decide whether or not you want to install any optional updates.
Depending on which updates are available for your computer, you may need to restart your computer during this process. You should then repeat the instructions above until no more important updates are available for your computer.
Windows XP
To install Windows updates in Windows XP, do the following:
- Go to http://update.microsoft.com.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- We recommend you install all critical updates.
- You can decide whether or not you want to install any optional updates.
Depending on which updates are available for your computer, you may need to restart your computer during this process. You should then repeat the instructions above until no more critical updates are available for your computer.
