Setting an unlock pattern in Android

Set an unlock pattern for Android to protect your sensitive data.

Before You Begin

If you use Android to access sensitive data, such as your email or calendar, you should consider setting an unlock pattern. Doing so protects your data in case an untrustworthy person gets a hold of your device (for example, if it is lost or stolen).

Set an Unlock Pattern in Android

To set an unlock pattern in Android, do the following:

  1. Press Settings > Location & security.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Press Set unlock pattern.
    • Press Configure lock screen > Pattern.
  3. Read the on-screen instructions which describe how to set an unlock pattern.
    • These instructions may appear only the first time you enter this setting.
  4. Press Next.
  5. Watch the example which shows how to set an unlock pattern.
    • This example may appear only the first time you enter this setting.
  6. Press Next.
  7. Using your finger, draw an unlock pattern that you will remember.
  8. Press Continue.
  9. Draw the same unlock pattern again.
  10. Press Confirm.

Your device now requires your unlock pattern to unlock it. If your Android device is a phone, you do not have to provide your unlock pattern to answer calls or make emergency calls. You must use your unlock pattern to make normal calls.
