Error: SPSS quit unexpectedly

After running SPSS Statistics 17, PASW Statistics 18, or PASW Statistics 19 for a while, the application returns an error and quits unexpectedly on Mac OS X.

Problem

You have installed SPSS 17, PASW 18, or PASW 19 with server licensing on Mac OS X. During the installation, you entered spss.ilstu.edu as the address of the licensing server.

After running the application for a while (anywhere between thirty seconds and ten minutes), it terminates (crashes) with one of the following errors:

The application SPSS Statistics 17.0 quit unexpectedly.

or

The application PASW Statistics 18 quit unexpectedly.

or

The application PASW Statistics 19 quit unexpectedly.

Solution

Use the IP address of the SPSS licensing server rather than the DNS name (spss.ilstu.edu) of the licensing server to avoid this issue.

Installing SPSS 17, PASW 18, or PASW 19

When installing SPSS 17, PASW 18 or PASW 19, do the following:

  • When prompted to enter the address of the SPSS licensing server, enter 10.128.102.1 instead of spss.ilstu.edu.

Fixing SPSS 17, PASW 18, or PASW 19 (Already Installed)

If SPSS 17, PASW 18, or PASW 19 is already installed and configured with the licensing server address, spss.ilstu.edu, you can uninstall and reinstall the application using the IP address shown above, or you can fix the application by doing the following:

  1. Make sure SPSS 17, PASW 18, or PASW 19 is closed.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • SPSS 17: Double-click Macintosh Hard Drive > Applications > SPSSInc.
    • PASW 18: Double-click Macintosh Hard Drive > Applications > SPSSInc.
    • PASW 19: Double-click Macintosh Hard Drive > Applications > IBM.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • SPSS 17: Double-click Statistis17.
    • PASW 18: Double-click PASWStatistics18.
    • PASW 19: Double-click Statistics.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • SPSS 17: Right-click on SPSSStatistics17.0 and select Show Package Contents.
    • PASW 18: Right-click on PASWStatistics18.0 and select Show Package Contents.
    • PASW 19: Right-click on SPSSStatistics and select Show Package Contents.
    • If your mouse does not have a right mouse button, hold down the control key on your keyboard and click the file instead.
  5. Double-click Contents.
  6. Double-click bin.
  7. Double-click the file named spssprod.inf.
    • You may be asked to choose an application to open the file. Choose TextEdit.
  8. Find the line that says, DaemonHost=spss.ilstu.edu, and change it to the following:
    • DaemonHost=10.128.102.1
  9. When you are done changing the DaemonHost line, click File > Save.
  10. Close TextEdit.
  11. Close any other windows you may have open.

You can now use SPSS 17, PASW 18, or PASW 19 without it unexpectedly crashing.
