Overview of IPTV at Illinois State University

Members of Illinois State University can watch TV on the Web through tv.ilstu.edu.

Students, faculty, and staff at Illinois State can watch television online by visiting http://tv.ilstu.edu/. This service, known as IPTV, offers a subset of channels available through Illinois State cable TV.

Watch TV through tv.ilstu.edu

To watch television online at Illinois State, do the following:

  1. Go to http://tv.illinoisstate.edu/.
  2. Click the play icon in the center of the page to launch the media player.
    • The first time you click this icon you may be asked to install a Java plugin.
  3. The channel lineup is shown on the left. Click one of the channel names to change stations.

To enlarge/shrink the television picture in the media player, do the following:

  • Click TV in the upper-left corner of the window to maximize the television picture within the media player.
  • Click onGuide in the upper left-corner to switch back to the onGuide view, which displays the channel lineup and puts a small television picture in the upper-right corner.

To make the media player full screen, do the following:

  • Click the plus (+) button in the upper-right corner of the window to make the media player full screen.
  • Press Escape on your keyboard to exit full screen mode. (If this does not immediately work, click anywhere on the media player window and press Escape again.)

Requirements for tv.illinoisstate.edu

To watch streaming television through tv.illinoisstate.edu, you must meet the following requirements:

  • On Campus Only: You must be using a computer connected to the campus network (not VPN).
  • Wired Only: You must be connected using a wired network connection (not wireless).
  • Java Required: Your browser must have Java installed.
  • Network Ports: This service uses inbound ports UDP 4900 and UDP 4901.

How to Get Help

IPTV is a pilot project offered by Telecommunications & Networking at Illinois State. This technology is currently being tested on campus.

If you have problems watching television online through tv.illinoisstate.edu, please contact your department's technical support staff for assistance. If you are not logged on to your computer as an administrator, your technical support staff may need to add inbound ports UDP 4900 and UDP 4901 to your firewall.
