Windows 7 periodically reports that McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Antispyware Module is turned off
A message appears that says McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Antispyware module is turned off.
Problem
This article pertains to McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.7i with Antispyware Module and Patch 2 on Windows 7.
On Windows 7, an Action Center message bubble periodically flashes above the system tray. The message appears and disappears so quickly it may be difficult or impossible to read.
The message says the following:
Click to see antispyware programs
Windows Defender and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Antispyware Module both report that they are turned off. Click to view antispyware programs.
Despite the message, when you view the Action Center in Windows 7, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Antispyware module is turned on.
Solution
This problem is a known issue with McAfee VirusScan 8.7i with Patch 3 or lower. McAfee has released Patch 4 to resolve this issue.
To resolve this problem, do the following:
- Verify that you are running McAfee VirusScan 8.7i and that you do not already have Patch 4 or higher installed.
- To do this, right-click on the VirusScan icon and choose About VirusScan Enterprise....
- The VirusScan icon is located in your system tray (next to your clock in the lower-right corner of your desktop).
- Look for the Installed Patches: line. If the corresponding number is 3 or less, then you can install Patch 4.
- Download and install Patch 4 for McAfee VirusScan 8.7i.
After you install Patch 4, you will no longer receive incorrect messages from the Action Center in Windows 7.
Enable Messages in Action Center
If you previously disabled messages about VirusScan in the Action Center, you can re-enable them by doing the following:
- Click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Action Center.
- Click Change Action Center settings on the left side of the window.
- Put a check mark next to the boxes labeled Spyware and related protection and Virus protection.
- Click OK.
- Close Action Center.
