Understanding the two options available through the media streaming server

The campus media streaming server allows you to embed audio and video using object code or a web address.

Before You Begin

When you request access to the media streaming server, you must choose between two options:

  • Stream using embedded object code
  • Stream using a web address

If you need access to both options, you can indicate that during your request. Each of these options is discussed in more detail below.

Stream Using Embedded Object Code

To make use of streaming audio or video which is embedded through object code, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You have access to the web share where your website files are stored.
  • You have permission to edit the website on which you want to display streaming audio or video.
  • You understand how to edit HTML code.

This option is appropriate for any faculty member who uses his or her personal website for class-related purposes. It is also appropriate for any staff member who maintains the website for his or her college, department or unit.

Stream Using Web Address

To make use of streaming audio or video which is embedded through the use of a web address, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You have access to the blog or website on which you want to display streaming audio or video.
  • You have the ability to add a link to the blog or website on which you want to display the streaming audio or video.

This option is appropriate for any faculty or staff member who has access to a blog that has a streaming media plug-in installed. The campus blog server located at http://blogs.ilstu.edu/ has the necessary plug-in installed and works with the campus streaming media server.

It can also be used to add a link to any website or web-based application. This might be a website you have created, or it could be a web-based application to which you have the ability to add links.
