Installing Rosetta in Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Rosetta is needed to install and use some legacy applications on Mac OS X 10.6.
Before You Begin
Rosetta is an Apple utility that allows applications designed for Power PCs to run on Intel-based Macs. This optional component is not installed in Mac OS X 10.6 by default. The first time you run an installer or application that needs Rosetta, you will be prompted to install it. This requires either an Internet connection or your Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD.
Installing Rosetta using an Internet Connection
To install Rosetta on a computer with an Internet connection, do the following:
- The first time you try to use an installer or program that needs Rosetta Mac OS X 10.6.x will prompt you to install Rosetta. See Figure 1.
- Click Install and Rosetta will download and install.
Rosetta is now installed and you may proceed to install and use any programs that require it.
Installing Rosetta using the Snow Leopard DVD
To install Rosetta on a computer without an Internet connection, do the following:
- The first time you try to use an installer or program that needs Rosetta, Mac OS X 10.6.x will prompt you to install Rosetta from your Snow Leopard DVD. (See figure 2)
- Click OK to close out the prompt for Rosetta.
- Insert the Snow Leopard DVD.
- Once the DVD mounts, double-click Optional Installs and then double-click Optional Installs.mpkg. The Installer will launch and run.
- Click Continue.
- Read the software license and click Continue. When you are prompted, click Agree.
- Select your hard drive, if not already selected at the Destination Selection section. Then, click Continue.
- Click the check box in front of Rosetta. (See figure 3)
- Click Install.
- Enter your computer administrator password when prompted.
- You should receive the message, “The Installation was completed successfully.” Click Close.
Rosetta is now installed and you may proceed to install and use any programs that require it.
