End of Support for McAfee Virex

Illinois State University will end official support for McAfee Virex on October 1, 2009.

According to the McAfee Engine and Product Support Life Cycle website, the McAfee Virex product was scheduled for End of Support / End of Life on November 1, 2008. Virus definition (DAT) updates are no longer being released or distributed for McAfee Virex.

As of October 1, 2009, Illinois State University will no longer support McAfee Virex.

Once support for the product ends, McAfee Virex will no longer be available for download through the University Computer Help Desk website. McAfee Virex will lose its status as officially supported software through the University Computer Help Desk.

If you currently use McAfee Virex, you may continue to do so, but you are encouraged to switch to a newer, supported anti-virus product. The University-approved anti-virus product for Mac OS X is McAfee Security for Mac. To use McAfee Security for Mac, you must be running Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later. Local technical support units may opt to continue providing technical support to faculty and staff who still use McAfee Virex.
