Unable to upload files in Blackboard

You are unable to upload files to Blackboard because the My Computer icon is either missing or has a red X.

Problem

After logging in to Blackboard, you attempt to upload files, but you find that the My Computer icon in Blackboard is either missing or has been replaced by a red X. As a result, you are unable to browse to files stored on your computer, which you want to upload to Blackboard.

Solution

This problem is caused by Java being out of date, not installed, or not allowed to run.

First, close your browser and reopen it. Then log back in to Blackboard. Click "Yes" to any security warnings you receive. If you are still unable to upload files because the My Computer icon is missing or has been replaced by a red X, you should install the latest version of Java.

This problem can be caused if you have an old version of Java installed or if you do not have Java installed at all. To update to the latest version of Java, do the following:

  1. Go to www.java.com.
  2. Click the button labeled Free Java Download.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    • To install Java, you must close all open browser windows (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.).
  4. After installing the latest version of Java, log back in to Blackboard and try uploading files again.
