How to determine if you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows

Refer to the properties of your computer to determine if you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.

Windows Vista and Windows 7

To determine whether you are running 32-bit or 64-bit, do the following:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click on Computer and click Properties.
  3. Under the System category, System type indicates either a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.

Windows XP

To determine whether you are running 32-bit or 64-bit, do the following:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click on My Computer and click Properties.
  3. Under the System category, you will see 64-Bit Edition if you are running the 64-bit version of Windows XP. If you do not see 64-Bit Edition, you are running a 32-bit version.
