Error: "There was an error running the higher-versioned setup program to do removal"
When you attempt to install McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator, you get an error.
Problem
When you attempt to install McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) on Windows XP/Vista, you receive the following error:
Error: McAfee Agent and Update Setup
There was an error running the higher-versioned setup program to do removal.
You are unable to successfully complete the McAfee ePO installation.
Solution
This error can occur when files from a previous installation are found during the new install. To resolve this problem, completely remove McAfee VirusScan and ePO and manually delete all remaining files. Then reinstall McAfee VirusScan and ePO, in that order.
- Click Start > Control Panel.
- Do one of the following:
- In Windows Vista, double-click Programs and Features.
- In Windows XP, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Locate and remove all McAfee and Network Associates applications, such as:
- McAfee Anti-Spyware
- McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
- McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator
- Now manually delete all remaining files and folders left over from the previous McAfee VirusScan installations. The following directories should be deleted if they exist:
- C:\Program Files\McAfee
- C:\Program Files\Network Associates
- C:\Common Files\McAfee
- C:\Common Files\Network Associates
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\McAfee
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Network Associates
- C:\ProgramData\McAfee
- C:\ProgramData\Network Associates
- Restart your computer.
- Install McAfee VirusScan Enterprise.
- Restart your computer.
- Install ePolicy Orchestrator.
If you are using a firewall, such as the Windows firewall (recommended), make sure all necessary ePO ports have been added to your firewall exceptions list. Refer to 1472: Opening firewall ports for McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator.
