Installing AirPort 4.2 on Mac OS X 10.3

Install the AirPort 4.2 update on Mac OS X 10.3 so you can connect to the "isunet" wireless network on campus.

If you have problems connecting to the "isunet" with Mac OS X 10.3, install the AirPort 4.2 update. You may obtain this update through Software Updates in the Apple menu. Unlike most Mac OS updates, the AirPort 4.2 update is not installed by default. You must manually select it when running Software Update.

Determine Your Version of Mac OS X

Before you can download and install the AirPort 4.2 update, your computer must be running Mac OS X 10.3.3 through 10.3.9.

To determine your version of Mac OS X, do the following:

  1. Click the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
  2. Select About This Mac.
  3. Your version of Mac OS X is displayed.

If you are running Mac OS X 10.3.2 (or lower), you must update your Mac OS before you can obtain the AirPort 4.2 update.

Update Mac OS X to 10.3.9

To use Software Update, you must have a working Internet connection. In Milner Library, you can connect to "isu-public" for purposes of getting the update.

To update Mac OS X to version 10.3.9, do the following:

  1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection.
  2. Click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen.
  3. Select Software Update....
  4. The Software Update window will appear and begin checking for updates.
  5. Look for Mac OS X Update Combined 10.3.9 in the list of available updates. (Figure 1)
  6. Make sure this update is selected with a check mark. You may have several other updates to install as well.
  7. Click the Install button to begin installing the selected updates.
  8. Restart your computer when prompted to do so.

Your computer is now updated to Mac OS X 10.3.9. You may now download and install the AirPort 4.2 update.

Download and Install AirPort 4.2 Update

To download and install the AirPort 4.2 update for Mac OS X 10.3.3 through 10.3.9, do the following:

  1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection.
  2. Click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen.
  3. Select Software Update....
  4. The Software Update window will appear and begin checking for updates.
  5. Look for AirPort Software 4.2 in the list of available updates. (Figure 2)
  6. Place a check mark next to this update. You may have several other updates to install as well.
  7. Click the Install button to begin installing the selected updates.
  8. Restart your computer when prompted to do so.

Now that you have the AirPort 4.2 update installed, connect to the "isunet" wireless network.
