Installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Download and install Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows Vista.

Before You Begin

Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista was released by Microsoft on March 18, 2008. This Important update is being delivered through Windows Update. For details on this update, refer to the Microsoft TechNet Windows Vista Service Pack 1 website.

Before you download and install SP1 for Windows Vista, consider the following:

  • Backup important data before installing SP1. You'll be happy you have backups if you experience problems installing SP1.
  • Scan your computer for viruses and spyware before installing SP1. If your computer is infected, the installation of SP1 may not go as planned.

Important!
If you are a faculty or staff member, do not install Service Pack 1 on your office computer without consulting your department's technical support staff. Your department may have plans for when and how to apply SP1 to your Windows Vista computer.

Download and Apply SP1 for Windows Vista

To download and apply Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, do the following:

  1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection.
  2. Click Start > All Programs > Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates on the left side of the window.
  4. Windows Vista will check for new updates. When it is finished, you are taken back to the main Windows Update window.
  5. Click View available updates on the right side of the window (beneath the Install Updates button).
  6. Verify that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330) is listed and selected with a check mark.
  7. Click the Install button.
  8. After Service Pack 1 is finished installing, restart your computer.
