Installing Telnet on Windows Vista/7

By default, Telnet is not installed in Windows Vista or Windows 7. Follow these instructions to install the Telnet application.

Before you begin

You must use an Administrator account in Windows Vista or Windows 7 to install Telnet.

Installing Telnet

  1. Click Start > Control Panel.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • In Windows Vista, click Classic View in the left sidebar.
    • In Windows 7, click Programs.
  3. Double-click on Programs and Features.
  4. Click Turn Windows features on or off in the left sidebar.
  5. When the Windows Features dialog box appears, scroll down and put a check mark in the box labeled, Telnet Client.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Windows will now install the Telnet application.

To launch Telnet, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Type telnet in the search box where it says Start Search and press Enter.

To launch Telnet so it immediately connects to the desired server, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Type telnet server_address in the search box and press Enter (where server_address is the address of the server you want to connect to). For example, you can type telnet traveler.ilstu.edu to connect directly to traveler.ilstu.edu.
