What is the difference between a student worker Exchange account and a regular user?
There are a few important differences between a student worker's account and a regular user account on Exchange.
A student worker's Exchange account differs from a regular user's Exchange account in a few important ways:
- A student worker is assigned a special user name for Exchange and does not log in with his or her ULID.
- A student worker is assigned a special password for Exchange and does not use his or her regular ULID password.
- A student worker's Exchange email address is @exchange.ilstu.edu (instead of just @ilstu.edu).
- A student worker cannot forward his or her ilstu.edu email to Exchange (though a graduate student employed by Illinois State University can).
- A student worker account is set up to use Exchange calendar and email (i.e. Full Exchange not Exchange Calendar Only).
User Name and Password
A student worker's Exchange account uses a special user name called a DLID, which is assigned when the account is created.
A student worker's DLID follows the format, dept_ulid, where dept is the acronym of the department that employs the student worker and ulid is the student worker's ULID. Some departments might employ a different naming convention for student worker DLIDs.
A student worker's password for Exchange is also assigned when the account is created. A student worker cannot change his or her password for Exchange.
@exchange.ilstu.edu
A student worker's email address is dept_ulid@exchange.ilstu.edu, instead of @ilstu.edu. This is because the student worker's two email addresses must remain separate. One account is on the IMAP mail server and the other is on the Exchange server. A regular user (i.e. a faculty or staff member) can also have an account on both the IMAP mail server and Exchange, but a regular user account has an email address of @ilstu.edu in both places.
Email Forwarding to Exchange
Student workers are not allowed to forward their ilstu.edu email to Exchange, but graduate students who work for Illinois State may do so upon request.
Student Workers
Student workers are not allowed to forward ilstu.edu email to Exchange. A student's two email accounts must remain separate. The student's regular ilstu.edu email account on the IMAP mail server is retained for academic purposes, and the Exchange email account is used for work purposes.
Graduate Students Employed by Illinois State
Graduate students who are employed by the University can request to have their ilstu.edu email forwarded to Exchange. This cannot be done through the normal ULID Email Forwarding method found on the ULID Maintenance website. For instructions on how to request this email forward, refer to 1598: How to forward a graduate student's ULID email to an Exchange email address.
Full Exchange
A student worker's Exchange is set up for Full Exchange. Email sent to the student worker's Exchange account is not delivered to his or her Inbox on the IMAP mail server, but is delivered to the student worker's Exchange Inbox instead. This helps keep the student worker's two email accounts separate, as described above.
