Overview of the mainframe
The campus mainframe is primarily used by full-time employees of Illinois State University. Students in programming classes also sometimes use the mainframe for programming projects.
Accessing the Mainframe
To access the mainframe, you must use a secure 3270 client. You can download QWS3270 Secure for Windows or tn3270 for Mac OS X.
Off-campus users: To access the mainframe from off campus, you need to first establish a VPN connection using either the Cisco VPN Client or Network Connect in WebVPN. Once you have established a VPN connection, you can connect to the mainframe using a secure 3270 client.
- 1091: Connecting with Cisco VPN Client for Windows
- 1119: Connecting with Cisco VPN Client for Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6
- 1322: Connecting with the Network Connect WebVPN client
Mainframe User ID and Password
To log in to the mainframe, enter your mainframe User ID and password. Your mainframe User ID is assigned when a mainframe account is set up for you. Your mainframe User ID may be your ULID, but it could be something different.Your mainframe User ID and password are not tied to your ULID account in any way. For example, your mainframe password does not change when you change your ULID password.
Getting Help with the Mainframe
You can reset your mainframe password using the Mainframe Password Reset web page. If you have problems resetting your mainframe password or are still unable to log in to the mainframe, please call the Enterprise Service Desk (ESD) at (309)438-3308. If you have trouble installing or running QWS3270 Secure or tn3270 on your computer, please call the University Computer Help Desk at (309)438-4357.
Configuring QWS3270 Secure and tn3270
