Configuring Windows Mail with campus mail settings
Configure Windows Mail in Windows Vista so you can use it to check and send email with your university email account.
Before You Begin
These instructions explain how to configure Windows Mail with your ULID email account. Follow these instructions if you plan to use Windows Mail primarily from on campus (with the option of using it from off campus). These instructions use IMAP mail settings.
If you plan to use Windows Mail primarily from off campus (or as a mobile user who will roam between on campus and off campus), refer to 1409: Configuring Windows Mail with MailVPN settings.
Configure Windows Mail
To configure Windows Mail in Windows Vista for use with your ULID email account, do the following:
- Open Windows Mail. Click Start > All Programs > Windows Mail.
- Click Tools > Accounts...
- On the right side of the Internet Accounts window, click Add....
- Select E-mail Account and click Next.
- Type your name and click Next.
- Type your email address and click Next. Your university email address is yourULID@ilstu.edu.
- Select whether you would like to use POP3 or IMAP. If you're not sure what to choose, pick IMAP. For more information, see 1172: What is the difference between POP and IMAP?.
- For Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server:, type
mail.ilstu.edu. - For Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name:, type
smtp.ilstu.edu. - Click Next.
- Make sure the E-mail username: field contains your ULID. We recommend leaving the Password: field empty so Windows Mail prompts you to enter your password each time you check mail.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
Windows Mail will now download your mail folders and email. You may now use Windows Mail to check and send email.
Authentication Failed
If you did not supply your password during account setup, you will receive the error: "The server has rejected your login. Please verify that your user name and password are correct."
Click OK on the error message, and enter your ULID and password. We recommend you uncheck the option, Remember my credentials, so Windows Mail prompts you to enter your password each time you check mail.
Off-campus users: To check your email from off campus, you need to first establish a VPN connection using either the Cisco VPN Client or Network Connect in WebVPN. If you regularly use Windows Mail from off campus, you can configure it with MailVPN settings instead, which eliminates the need for an independent VPN connection.
