What is Windows Vista?
Windows Vista is a new operating system available from Microsoft. Microsoft will release Windows Vista to home users on January 30th, 2007. Windows Vista was released to businesses in November 2006. Are there different versions of Windows Vista?
There are five different versions of Windows Vista: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. Microsoft recommends you choose the version of Windows Vista that's right for you based on how you use your computer. What does "Windows Vista Certified" mean?
In anticipation of Windows Vista, many products are starting to appear on the market that are designated "Windows Vista Certified," "Windows Vista Capable," and "Windows Vista Premium Ready." According to Microsoft, these labels are defined as follows:
- Windows Vista Certified: This designation is usually found on software. It means that Microsoft has tested the software and verified it is compatible with Windows Vista.
- Windows Vista Capable: You will see this advertised on new computers. It means that the computer meets the minimum system requirements to install and run Windows Vista.
- Windows Vista Premium Ready: You will see this advertised on new computers as well. It means that the computer exceeds the minimum requirements and will be able to take advantage of Windows Vista's new 3D interface called "Aero".

Can I upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista without losing everything?
Some computers can be upgraded to Windows Vista without losing all applications, files, and settings. However, it depends on the version of Windows XP/2000 you currently have installed and the version of Windows Vista you plan to upgrade to. When is Illinois State University going to install Windows Vista in computer labs and offices?
The decision to install Windows Vista is left up to the technical support units that manage campus computer labs and offices. However, the general consensus is that Windows Vista will not be widely available until the summer of 2007 at the earliest. Faculty and staff may get more information by contacting their departments' technical support staff.
