Displaying PowerPoint slides on the Web
By saving your PowerPoint presentation to your Website share on Datastore01, you can display it on the Web.
Before You Begin
These instructions explain how to display a PowerPoint presentation as a slideshow on the Web. Students may be required to do this for class.
To perform these instructions, you must know how to map network drives to your personal share on Datastore. For more information, refer to:
- 1008: Map network drives to Datastore in Windows XP/Vista/7
- 1009: Map network drives to Datastore in Mac OS X
These instructions assume you do not already have a web page in your "web" directory on your personal share on Datastore. If you already have a personal website, you should name your PowerPoint presentation something other than "index.html" (as described in Step 8, below) to avoid overwriting your existing web page.
Saving Your PowerPoint Presentation to the Web
- Start by creating your PowerPoint presentation.
- When you're done, save your PowerPoint presentation to your personal computer, flash drive, or wherever you prefer.
- Map network drives to your personal share on Datastore.
- Make sure your PowerPoint presentation is open.
- Within PowerPoint, click File > Save As....
- Browse to your "web" directory on Datastore and select it as the place you would like to save your slideshow to.
- Click the Save as type: drop-down menu and select Web Page (*.htm; *.html).
- In the File name: field, type
index.html. If you already have a web page in your "web" directory on Datastore, you should use a different filename, likeslideshow.html, to avoid overwriting your existing web page. - Click Save.
This will place a folder called "index_files" and a file named "index.html" in your "web" directory on Datastore.
View Your PowerPoint Slideshow on the Web
To view your PowerPoint presentation on the Web, go to http://my.ilstu.edu/~yourULID. (The little squiggle before your ULID is called a "tilde" and is located to the left of the 1 key on your keyboard.)
For example, Reggie Redbird's ULID is rrredbi, so he would view his PowerPoint slideshow at http://my.ilstu.edu/~rrredbi.
If you named your file something other than index.html...
If you named your PowerPoint presentation something other than index.html, you must use that file name when typing your web address. For example, if you named it "slideshow.html," you must include that file name in the web address. You would go to http://my.ilstu.edu/~yourULID/slideshow.html. Other people, like your instructor or students, will also need to know the full web address to view your slideshow.
