Configuring LDAP directory search in Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010

Configure LDAP directory search in Outlook so you can search for all people at Illinois State University (not just those in the Exchange Global Address List).

Before You Begin

By default, Outlook on Exchange uses the Global Address List (GAL) for people searches. The GAL includes only Exchange users, which means those who do not have Exchange accounts (like students) are excluded from the search.

Configure the LDAP directory search in Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010 to search Active Directory (ad.ilstu.edu). This allows you to search everyone at Illinois State University, not just Exchange users.

Configure LDAP Directory Search in Outlook

To configure LDAP directory search in Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010, do the following:

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • In Outlook 2007, click Tools > Account Settings.... Click Address Books and then click New.
    • In Outlook 2010, click the File tab. Then click Account Settings > Account Settings.... Then click the Address Books tab and click New....
  3. Select Internet Directory Search (LDAP) and click Next.
  4. In the Server Name: box, type ad.ilstu.edu.
  5. Click the check box labeled, This server requires me to log on.
  6. Leave the User Name: and Password: boxes empty (unless you are setting this up on a personal computer. More information for home users is found below).
  7. Put a check mark in the box labeled, Require Secure Password Authentication (SPA).
  8. Click More Settings....
  9. A message appears which says one of the following:
    • Outlook 2007: "The E-mail Account you just added will not start until you choose Exit from the File menu, and then restart Microsoft Office Outlook." Click OK.
    • Outlook 2010: "You must restart Outlook for these changes to take effect." Click OK.
  10. A Microsoft LDAP Directory window appears. Under Display Name, delete ad.ilstu.edu and type ISU People Search.
  11. Click the Search tab.
  12. Put a check mark in the box labeled, Enable Browsing (requires server support).
  13. Click OK.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Click Finish.
  16. Click Close on the Account Settings window.
  17. Close and reopen Outlook.

Personal Computers

If you are configuring LDAP directory search on a personal computer (i.e. a computer that is not bound to ADILSTU), you must specify your ULID and password in step 6, above. Enter the following:

  • User Name: adilstu\yourULID
  • Password: your ULID password

It is unnecessary to supply your ULID and password on university-owned workstations bound to ADILSTU because Outlook will use your cached credentials.

When you change your password...

You are required to change your ULID password every 60 days. After changing your password, you must update it in Outlook as well. To update Outlook with your new password, do the following:

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Outlook 2007: Click Tools > Account Settings.... Click Address Books.
    • Outlook 2010: Click the File tab, click Account Settings > Account Settings.... Then click the Address Books tab in the Account Settings window.
  3. Double-click your LDAP directory search entry to open it.
  4. Delete the old password from the Password: box, and type your new password.
  5. Click Next and then Finish.
