Configuring Outlook 2011 for Exchange
These instructions explain how to configure Outlook 2011 for Exchange on Mac OS X, whether for Exchange Calendar Only or Full Exchange.
Before You Begin
These instructions explain how to configure Outlook 2011 for Exchange on Mac OS X.
- Full Exchange: If you plan to use Exchange for both calendar and email, you will be able to do so after completing these instructions.
- Calendar Only: If you plan to use Exchange for calendar only, you must also set up the server-side calendar-only rule in Outlook.
These instructions apply to University workstations, as well as personally owned computers. These instructions apply to both on-campus and off-campus computers. A VPN connection is not required for off-campus computers, but having an active VPN connection will provide you with a better experience.
You can use these instructions to set up Exchange for a ULID account or a DLID account. DLID accounts are commonly issued to student workers who are required to use Exchange for their campus jobs.
Configure Outlook 2011 for Exchange
To configure Outlook 2011 for Exchange, do the following:
- Open Outlook 2011.
- Click Tools > Accounts....
- Click Exchange Account.
- Enter your email address in the E-mail address: field.
- Your email address is yourULID@ilstu.edu.
- If you are configuring Outlook 2011 with a DLID account, your email address is yourDLID@exchange.ilstu.edu.
- Enter your ULID in the User name: field.
- It is not necessary to specify a domain.
- If you are configuring Outlook 2011 with a DLID account, enter your DLID in the User name: field.
- Enter your password in the Password: field.
- Make sure there is a check mark next to Configure automatically.
- Click Add Account.
- Outlook 2011 will automatically connect to the Exchange server and obtain the appropriate settings.
- Close the the Accounts window.
Outlook 2011 is now configured for Exchange. It may take a few moments for Outlook to begin displaying your email and calendar items.
Add Calendar Only Rule
If you plan to use the Exchange Calendar Only option, then you should apply the Calendar Only Rule to Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2007 on Windows (even though you plan to use Outlook 2011 on Mac OS X). This rule cleans up your Inbox so it contains only meeting-related emails.
Do not apply this rule if you plan to use the Full Exchange option. If you have ever added the Calendar Only Rule in the past, you do not need to import it again, even if you set up Outlook again at any point.
Using Outlook 2011 Off Campus
If you plan to use Outlook 2011 from off campus, you should be aware that you cannot do live searches on the Global Address List (GAL) unless you have an active VPN connection. However, Outlook 2011 provides an offline address book, which is a cached version of the GAL.
If you find that you are not seeing expected search results when attempting to send email or meeting invites, you should connect through VPN and then try searching for people or locations in the GAL again.
