Sending email in Outlook 2003

Send email from your university email account using Outlook 2003.

To send email using Outlook 2003, follow the directions below.

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Click New on the Outlook toolbar.
  3. In the To: field type the recipient's email address. If you want to add multiple addresses, press Enter after typing each email address to go to the next line. Or place a comma (,) or semi-colon (;) after each address if you'd like to put them on the same line.
  4. In the Subject: field type a brief description of your email.
  5. Type your email in the body of the message.
  6. Click on the Send button located in the upper left of the new message window.

Off-campus users: To check your email from off campus, you need to first establish a VPN connection using either the Cisco VPN Client or Network Connect in WebVPN. After you are connected through VPN, you can check and send email using Outlook 2003. If you check email primarily from off campus, you can configure Outlook 2003 to use MailVPN settings, which eliminates the need for an independent VPN connection.

Here are some tips:

  • When you begin to fill out the To: field in a new email message, Outlook will attempt to match the address with one in its history (e.g. an address to which you've previously sent email).
  • CC: is used to send a Carbon Copy, a duplicate copy of your email, to another address.
  • BCC: stands for Blind Carbon Copy and works like CC except that any BCC recipients are hidden.
  • The BCC: field is hidden by default in Outlook 2003. To  unhide it, open a new email message, click the arrow next to Options, and select BCC:.
  • When you send a message, Outlook 2003 puts a copy in Sent Items, which is found under Personal Folders in your mailbox list. This is a local folder, which means you only have access to it on your current computer.
