Configuring Outlook 2003 with campus mail settings

Configure Outlook 2003 so you can use it to check email with your university email account. These instructions apply to your email account on the IMAP mail server.

Before You Begin

These instructions explain how to configure Outlook 2003 with your ULID email account. Follow these instructions if you plan to use Outlook primarily from on campus (with the option of using it from off campus). These instructions use IMAP mail settings.

If you plan to use Outlook primarily from off campus (or as a mobile user who will roam between on campus and off campus), refer to 1382: Configuring Outlook 2003 with MailVPN settings.

Faculty/Staff on Exchange: If you are faculty or staff and use Outlook for email, you may be on Exchange. If you are on Exchange for email, these instructions do not apply to you. Contact your department's technical support for help. Outlook 2003 is not supported for connecting to Exchange. For more information, refer to 1679: Configuring Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2007 for Exchange.

Configure Outlook 2003

To configure Outlook 2003 so you can use it with your ULID email account, do the following:

  1. Open Outlook 2003.
  2. Click Tools > E-mail Accounts...
  3. Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.
  4. Select IMAP and click Next.
  5. Enter your name in the box labeled Your Name:.
  6. Enter your university email address in the box labeled E-mail Address:.
  7. In the Incoming Mail Server: box, type mail.ilstu.edu.
  8. In the Outgoing Mail Server: box, type smtp.ilstu.edu.
  9. Make sure your ULID is in the User Name: box.
  10. Enter your password in the Password: box.
  11. Click Next.
  12. Click Finish.
  13. Outlook will then attempt to check mail. Enter your password if prompted to do so. You may need to connect over VPN prior to checking your mail (see below).

You may now use Outlook to check and send email.

Off-campus users: To check your email from off campus, you need to first establish a VPN connection using either the Cisco VPN Client or Network Connect in WebVPN. If you use Outlook 2003 regularly from off campus, you can configure it with MailVPN settings, which eliminates the need for an independent VPN connection.
